A big part of preventative care in cats and dogs is regular dental upkeep. This is usually a combination of steps you can take at home to keep your pet’s teeth in good shape as well as cleanings performed here in the clinic. During your pet’s wellness exam, the veterinarian will take a look at their teeth for any signs of plaque and tartar. This is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that hardens into that hard layer you may have noticed on your own teeth in between cleanings at the dentist.

One of the first signs of a problem is often bad breath, though many pet owners assume that’s just a normal part of cats and dogs. Unfortunately, if left untreated, dental disease can progress and become a serious problem for your pet. Gingivitis occurs when that bacteria makes its way under the gums, causing inflammation and pain.

An animal could start experiencing pain when they try to eat if the swelling gets bad enough. Another issue that can happen with advanced dental disease is that the bacteria can make its way into your pet’s bloodstream, potentially causing damage to their heart and other organs.

WE SUGGEST TALKING WITH THE VETERINARIAN ABOUT YOUR PET’S DENTAL HEALTH AT THEIR WELLNESS EXAM.

This is a great opportunity to go over any problems they see and schedule a cleaning if necessary. We can also discuss other solutions, such as tooth extractions for more advanced dental disease. Many of our clients opt to get yearly cleanings for their pets to maintain optimal health. As with all care at Everett, we’ll do everything we can to meet your pet’s unique needs. We hope you enjoy our personalized level of care in everything that we do.
